One of the many factors that contribute to the success of this family business is motivating their employees by creating a fun, family atmosphere. Jim and Karen understand the importance of giving employees time to balance work and family life. Employee recognition programs are important to maintaining their enthusiasm. Each Friday an “Employee of the Week” is chosen and rewarded. Once a year an “Employee of the Year” is chosen by all the employees and presented with a very special and personalized gift, such as a trip to Daytona Beach, Florida for NASCAR or a vacation in Hawaii.
It has always been important to select the best employees for the job. Several employees of Mission Viejo Glass, Inc. and Rancho Santa Margarita Glass have been with the company nearly 20 years, with a few passing the 30-year mark.
Jim and Karen offer their staff opportunities to attend seminars and continue their education. Once a year, representatives of the company attend the National Glass Convention in Las Vegas to gain new and innovative ideas within the glazing industry.
The family loves working together. Sons Matt and Brian hold important positions within the company. Matt operates and oversees the retrofit window division while Brian is being mentored by Jim to head the construction division. Their wives, Kristan and Allison are invaluable to both businesses, managing the offices at both locations.
Jim and Karen provide a nursery at the Rancho Santa Margarita location for their grandkids Jake and Taylor. It is very important to them to find the perfect balance for their working mom and to make sure family is still the most important part of their business.
Mission Viejo Glass, Inc. is also involved with many local charitable organizations and has many community affiliations. Each year they sponsor student athletes in various high school sports, including Tesoro High school, Trabuco Hills High School, Capistrano Valley High School, Saddleback College Football, as well as the Boy Scouts of America. They recently sent three of their employees to the Toys for Tots Golf Tournament, benefiting underprivileged youth in our area. They regularly contribute to Habit for Humanity and participated in Extreme Makeover Home Edition for a deserving family in Irvine.

On October 10, 2010, Brian Byrne participated in the 3rd Annual Orange County Triathlon, his first attempt in a multi-sport endurance event. Mission Viejo Glass, Inc. owners and proud parents, Jim and Karen Byrne as well as his wife Allison, were thrilled to have the opportunity to support Brian. This endurance event provided the means for Brian to tap into his self-discipline and competitiveness. "With triathlons you need to be fully committed. If you don't put in the hours, you won’t succeed”. During the many months of training, which required a commitment of several hours a day, Brian learned about both his mental and physical potential. The lessons he learned resonate in his personal and professional life. “It sharpened me. I was competing and pushing myself in a way that I never had before, constantly challenging that part of my personality that is always trying to improve. It helped shape me to be a better employee and husband.” Brian completed the Olympic distance triathlon course in an amazing 3 hours and 9 minutes a “starting point for improvement” Brian stated. “I am looking forward to competing again, my goal is to beat my time and continue to push myself beyond what I thought I was capable of, I welcome the challenge”.
